英國哲學家弗蘭西斯·培根在《論求知》（Of Studies）中說：「有的知識只須淺嘗，有的知識只須粗知，只有少數知識需要深入鑽研，仔細揣摩。所以，有的書只須讀其中一部分，有的書只須知道其中梗概，而對於少數好書，則要精讀，細讀，反覆地讀；有的書可以只讀別人的筆記摘要就行了，但這只限於粗糙的書。」（Some books are to be tasted,others to be swallowed,and some few to be chewed and digested:that is,some books are to be read only in parts;others to be read,but not curiously;and some few to be read wholly,and with diligence and attention;Some books also may be read by deputy,and extracts made of them by others,but that would be only in the less important arguments,and the meaner sort of books.）
