Calming the Wind and Waves
Su Shi (1036 - 1101, Song Dynasty)
English translation: John Balcom
(ed. John Gill & Susan Tidwell)
On March 7th, we encountered rain on the road to Shahu. The rain gear had already been sent ahead, and the travelers were in dire straits. I alone did not care. Later, after it cleaned, I wrote these lyrics.
Listen not to the pitter-patter of the rain
on the leaves;
Why not sing while walking slowly?
A bamboo cane and straw sandals
are lighter than riding a horse;
What is there to fear?
I'd wear a straw cloak throughout a life
of mist and rain.
The chilly spring breeze awakens me
from my tipsiness—A little cold.
The setting sun atop the mountain
welcomes me.
Turning my head, I see the dreary beaten way I came;
Going back
There is no wind and rain, nor bright sun.
